Breads · Contributed by Grandma Ruth
"Ruth braids six strands, not three, and will show anyone once — but only once."
Ingredients
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs, plus 1 for egg wash
- 1 tbsp salt
- 6-7 cups flour
- Sesame or poppy seeds, optional
Instructions
- Dissolve the yeast and a pinch of sugar in warm water, and let it foam for 5 minutes.
- Whisk in the remaining sugar, oil, and two eggs.
- Add salt and flour gradually, kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Let rise in an oiled bowl, covered, until doubled -- about 1.5 hours.
- Divide into six ropes and braid, tucking the ends under.
- Let rise again for 45 minutes, brush with egg wash, and bake at 350F for 30-35 minutes.
